The Working Women's History Project is the successor organization for the Women & Labor History Project.
We are incorporating as a not-for profit and we wanted a name that would reflect our interest in all working women: their history and activism. We want to see that these women are written back into history.
The Working Women's History Project is a network of Chicago history organizations. Among our sponsors are: Illinois Labor History Society, telling the story of Illinois labor for 25 years; The Center for New Deal Studies, Roosevelt University; Metro History Education Center, encouraging students to do original research on Chicago's history, the Chicago Teachers Union's Women's Rights Committee, the Chicago chapter of the Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW) and the Jewish Labor Committee.
The Chicago Area Women's History Conference found that not enough was known about working women in Chicago and we began doing research. We gave conferences for teachers to bring women's history into the classroom. They requested more information about the role of women in unions. That is our specialty. Through the National Women's History Project and the Chicago Area's Women's Studies Association, we developed the Women and Labor History Project, now the Working Women's History Project.
We have worked with union women on writing their own stories. We write and produce dramas on the lives of union women, which are available for school and unions. Our web site will enable us to reach more people.
